Direct part marking for long term traceability

When it comes to marking parts for long term traceability – which can often mean over 30 years in aerospace, transportation, or communications – durability is crucial. For this reason, many manufacturers opt to mark important information and codes directly on the surface of a part using the most permanent marking solutions available. Direct part marking, also known as DPM, is the process in which traceability markings, part numbers or logos are marked directly on the surface of a component or finished product.

Laser marking solutions offer permanent precision markings

The best options for durable direct part markings (DPM) on metals and plastics include laser marking, laser etching, laser engraving, dot peen, and in certain cases, ink jet. Technologies such as laser etching and engraving have often been favored for metal parts because they tend to be very durable, however they remove material to make markings which can sometimes lead to corrosion or changes in the structural integrity of the material. Dot peen is an older technology in which markings are created by small dots hammered into a surface. This solution is also quite durable, but does not tend to have the precision for smaller machine-readable codes like bar codes and data matrices. For these reasons laser marking, a technology in which precise, higher contrast markings on made on the surface layer of metals and plastics is often the best choice for permanent direct part markings.
